The automotion sector in Spanish represents 10% of GDP (including distribution and associated activities) and 19% of total Spanish exports. The industry generates 300,000 direct and 2 million indirect jobs linked to the sector.
Vehicle manufacturing in Spain has been growing for the last four years. In the period between 2012 and 2016, production was up 45%, representing 906,728 additional units, and approaching the industry target of three million, which will be achieved in 2017.
In 2016, 2,885,907 vehicles were manufactured in Spain, up 5.9% over the previous year.
Investment by the manufacturing industry in these years is estimated at 10 billion euros for the extension and modernization of plants. An average of 1.7 billion euros is invested each year.
8.5% of the vehicles manufactured in Spain were exported to over 100 countries in 2016. 2,432,431 vehicles were exported, representing a 7% increase in exports compared to the previous year, and an estimated export figure of 34,000 million euros.
Spanish production plants are among the most automated in Europe, with an average of 980 robots for every 10,000 workers, and they have one of the highest rates of investment in modernisation, automation and R+D+i among industrial sectors.
The technological progress in the sector is thanks to an advanced network of universities, technology centers and industrial clusters. There are 34 technology centers engaged in activities related to vehicle manufacturing.
Spare Parts Sector
The powerful Spanish spare parts industry is another of the key factors in the sector’s competitiveness. 1,000 companies manufacturing automotive equipment and spare parts belonging to 720 business groups are present in the country, guaranteeing service and supply for manufacturing plants.
The spare parts sector invoices almost 33 billion euros, of which 60% correspond to exports. Annual investment in the sector is estimated at 2 billion euros, with extremely high investment in R+D+i, to which it dedicates 2.8% of its revenues.
Spain is a privileged logistical platform for exports to markets in Europe, the United States, Latin America and the countries in the north of Africa and the Mediterranean basin.
Five million vehicles are transported via Spanish territory each year. The country’s modern logistical and distribution infrastructure is one of the main factors driving the competitiveness of the sector.
The automotive sector produced a commercial surplus of 17 billion euros in 2015. Sales to countries in the European Union accounted for 60% of vehicle exports. The sector is increasing its sales to third markets, and particularly to the united States, Turkey, Morocco and Mexico as the destination for exports of both vehicles and spare parts.
